The first step before you do any kind of online marketing is to do some online keyword research.

You can do some free online keyword research using Google, but they don't really give you accurate results when you are trying to see how many backlinks the top websites for any given keyword have.
The first step is to do a search for the Google Keyword Tool.
Once there you type in a few keywords or phrases that you want to target and enter the captcha and click "get keywoed ideas" Google will then return a list of keywords and related keywords that are possible for you.
The two headings you need to worry about are "Local Search Volume" which means the approximate number of searched on Google and it's search partners for the US and "Global Monthly Search Volume" which includes all countries and languages.
Try to find keywords that have high search volume like 1000 or more per month.
The results come back as "broad match" but "phrase match" gives a more accurate data for multiple word phrases.
The next step is to see how many competing pages there are online for the keywords you have selected.
Go to Google and type the keyword into the search bar using quotes like this "keyword here".
That will give you the phrase match results which are a lot more accurate when dealing with competition.
